- This is an updated version of the SATAN public documentation release of
- March 15, 1995. It has educational value because of the large number
- of problems in its example data base.
-
- ---------------------
-
- This is the SATAN public documentation release. We're releasing it so
- that you can get some idea of what the final product will be like.
-
- The first official release will be on April 5 at 16:00 MET, on host
- ftp.win.tue.nl as /pub/security/satan.tar.Z. Announcements will be
- posted to comp.security.misc and comp.unix.admin.
-
- The SATAN public documentation release is a complete SATAN kit with the
- data acquisition tools stripped off, and with sample data taken one
- year ago, when only half the tools were in place (and half of them were
- still broken).
-
- Additional software that you need: PERl 5, and a WWW browser (netscape
- or mosaic preferred, but Lynx should be possible, too). When you want
- to view the sample data, you will need a moderately fast workstation
- (sparc5, indy) with 32 MBytes of memory, and 64 MBytes of swap space or
- more. It looks better when you have a color display.
-
- In order get things up and running,
-
- - Run the `reconfig' script. It will patch some scripts with the
- pathnames of your PERL 5 executable, and your Web browser.
-
- - Run the `make' command. It will build a small md5 executable that is
- needed for authentication between SATAN and the Web browser.
-
- - Run the `satan' script. When run without arguments, it will start up
- a Web browser.
-
- - Choose the `data management' link, and load the `foo.org' data base.
- It may take several tens of seconds to read all data from file.
-
- Enjoy the reports and the documentation.
